I’ve been thinking about the half-truths and falsehoods about aging we’ve ingested over our lifetimes. Since I’ve been on a news diet, I had some extra brain space. My restless mind chewed on these myths. The more I thought, the clearer the actions became that we can use as an antidote to these toxic tales. Over the next month or so, I’ll introduce some of these myths and some shifts. Let’s get started!
You’re Too Old! Ah, the dreaded expiration date. Society whispers it into your ear when you’re considering a bold move: starting a business, learning a new skill, or even falling in love. “That ship has sailed,” they say, as if dreams come with a sell-by date. But here’s the truth: your potential doesn’t expire.
This myth exists because we’ve been conditioned to associate youth with opportunity and age with decline. It’s a lazy narrative that overlooks the richness of experience, the power of resilience, and the beauty of reinvention.
The Reality Check:
Late bloomers are bold flowers. Many people achieve their greatest milestones later in life. Julia Child didn’t publish her first cookbook until her 50s. Harriette Thompson ran her first marathon at 76 and became the oldest woman to complete a marathon at 92. Their age didn’t disqualify them; it gave them the confidence and clarity to succeed.
Wisdom is power. Aging isn’t a liability; it’s an asset. Your years bring a depth of understanding and a wealth of experience that younger people simply haven’t had the chance to gather yet.
It’s never “too late”. Whether it’s starting a new career, finding love, or embarking on an adventure, age is just a number. The only thing stopping you is your belief that you’re too old—and that belief is a lie.
Reframing the Narrative:
Let’s flip the script. Instead of “You’re too old,” the story becomes: “Now is the right time.” Your age isn’t a limitation; it’s a foundation. Every year you’ve lived, you’ve built the skills, strength, and resilience to tackle whatever comes next.
Reflective Prompts:
1. What’s something you’ve always wanted to do but felt it was “too late” to start? Why not start now?
2. Think of an accomplishment you’re proud of. How did your life experience contribute to that success?
Actionable Shift:
Try Something New. Pick one skill, hobby, or dream you’ve put off because you thought it was too late. Take one small step toward it today. Sign up for a class, reach out to a mentor, or simply set a goal.
Celebrate Your Age. Instead of hiding your age, own it! Tell someone one thing you love about being your age. Shifting your mindset starts with acknowledging your own value.
